In 2015, the Marc A.F. Baker Reading Room opened at the Depauville Free Library. It was a welcoming space for children to improve their reading. The services first began with one reading recovery teacher offering summer tutoring to approximately six children. The tutoring program has grown to its current summer staff of four certified reading teachers. Services offered in reading, writing and math. Our after school tutoring began three years ago extending free tutoring and homework support throughout the school year. Students who have been in both tutoring programs ranged in age from 5 to 14.
Over the summer of 2020, our 4 outstanding certified teachers held 229, free 1 on 1 sessions for 25 students. All CDC safety policies were in place and we came through with no covid issues and 25 children who literally danced up the steps to the library in anticipation of their IN PERSON lessons.
The need for this tutoring program continues to expand as our current educational concerns have affected students in so many ways. Not attending school over the past four months combined with the current hybrid school schedules, the 2020-21 school year make our in-person assistance even more essential to the success of many students.
No one can measure the full impact of lost instruction on student learning over time. We envision expanding our summer program to include one more tutor and hope to add additional tutors during the school year.
Please support this and many other programs that make Depauville Public Library
Small But Mighty
